Fira to Skaros Rock – A Storytelling Hiking Experience in Santorini
There is a path in Santorini that does not feel like a route.
It feels like a story unfolding step by step along the edge of the island.

We meet at the heart of Fira and begin walking together along one of the most breathtaking coastal paths in the world.
⛪ Fira – The Beginning of the Journey
The experience begins in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Ypapanti, one of the most important Orthodox churches in Santorini, originally built in 1827 and restored after the 1956 earthquake.
As the bells fade behind us, the caldera opens in front of us.
Below, the volcanic sea stretches endlessly. Across the water, Thirassia rests quietly. And in the distance, the remains of the ancient volcano remind us that this landscape was born from fire.
The story has already begun.
🌊 Walking the Edge of the Caldera
The path follows the cliffs northward, where every step reveals a new perspective.
White houses cling to the volcanic edge. Blue domes reflect the sun. Small chapels appear in unexpected corners, standing quietly between stone and sky.
Along the way, we pass the Catholic Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, built in 1823, one of the key religious landmarks of Fira, representing the island’s unique blend of cultures and history.
Not far from here, the Nomikos Conference Centre appears—a cultural space where Santorini’s past and present are expressed through exhibitions, art, and heritage displays.
But we do not stop.
The journey continues.
🌿 Firostefani – Where Villages Become One
Without noticing, Fira slowly transforms into Firostefani.
There are no borders here—only a continuous flow of whitewashed houses, narrow paths, and quiet terraces hanging above the sea.
Life feels slower here. Softer.
And then, one of Santorini’s most iconic views appears.
⛪ The Three Bells of Firostefani
The famous Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, known worldwide as the “Three Bells of Firostefani,” was built in the mid-18th century.
Its blue dome and bell tower rise above the caldera, framing one of the most photographed views in Greece.
This is where many people stop.
But our journey continues further.
🏛️ Hidden Monastery & Path Toward Imerovigli
Leaving Firostefani behind, we pass the historic Monastery of Saint Nicholas, founded in 1651, one of the oldest monastic sites in Santorini.
From here, the landscape becomes more dramatic.
The cliffs rise higher. The sea drops deeper. And ahead, the village of Imerovigli begins to appear like a white crown above the caldera.
🌅 Imerovigli – The Balcony of the Aegean
Imerovigli is known as the “Balcony of the Aegean,” and it is easy to understand why.
Here, the island opens completely.
White houses, blue domes, narrow paths, and endless sea views create one of the most peaceful and powerful landscapes in Santorini.
Above it all sits the iconic blue dome church, watching over the caldera in silence.
🏰 Skaros Rock – The Final Destination
The path leads us to Skaros Rock, once the medieval capital and fortress of Santorini.
Today, it stands as a dramatic volcanic formation rising from the sea, offering panoramic views over the entire caldera.
From here, you can see:
- Fira behind you
- Firostefani along the cliffs
- Imerovigli above the sea
- The volcanic islands in the center of the caldera
This is the moment where the journey becomes still.

This is an easy to moderate hike suitable for most visitors.
